What is a Veneer?
A veneer may be recommended as an alternative to a full crown. It is a less expensive but highly effective cosmetic treatment that will greatly improve your smile. Your dentist attaches a permanent porcelain cover to the front surface of each of your front teeth using a strong adhesive (called a cement). Think of it as a similar procedure to fitting false fingernails, with similar aesthetic improvements! How are they made? Your dentist will prepare your tooth in a similar way to that done for a crown but focusing attention on the front surface only. A dental impression is taken and sent to the laboratory. We then create a model of the tooth using a special investment material able to withstand the heat of a porcelain furnace. The veneer is then built on the model using fine layers of porcelain to create the colours, shades and textures recommended by your dentist. The finished veneers are then returned to your dentist for the final fitting. This is a procedure that is popular and effective, with the veneer becoming a permanent fixture to your front teeth. You can clean your teeth with a normal brush and not worry about the veneers. They will not require further attention from your dentist for many years. Ask your dentist if it is a procedure that would work for you.
